Revolutions and catastrophes have little effect on the basic outlook of Swiss youth, as long as they don’t happen in their immediate vicinity. The survey in May 2011, after Fukushima, revealed that Swiss youth were indeed a little more concerned about the environment and had become slightly more political. Career goals and their own environment remained, however, of much more central importance to them than social issues.
The international comparison section of the Credit Suisse Youth Barometer reveals exciting matches in values for each country and highlights real differences in terms of religious and economic orientation. Despite global trends such as Facebook, there are massive differences in fundamental attitudes such as faith and social and economic aspects. Even in the Internet age, young people in the different countries are most concerned by local culture and national problems. gfs.bern has commented on the most striking differences.
