People in the Basel region show strong support for the economies of both Basel cantons

11.08.2026 | Sophie Schäfer, GFS Bern

The majority of the population in Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft view the economy positively. Businesses are regarded as key pillars of employment, prosperity and the region’s appeal as a business location. At the same time, the challenges posed by economic growth – particularly in relation to transport and housing – are clearly identified.

Widespread support for the regional economy

The economy enjoys a high level of trust in the Basel region. Two-thirds of the population view the economy in Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft positively, whilst the Swiss economy is viewed positively by as many as 71 per cent. Support for the role of businesses is particularly strong: around nine out of ten respondents see them as a key pillar for employment, prosperity, education, innovation and the region’s attractiveness.

However, the results also reveal differences within the population. Women and younger adults view the economy somewhat more critically than men and older people. Similarly, assessments vary according to political preferences, although the fundamental importance of the economy is recognised across all political camps.

SMEs and large companies are seen as a shared model for success

The public attaches great importance to both small and medium-sized enterprises and large companies in terms of the region’s economic strength. Large companies are associated in particular with jobs, tax revenue and economic dynamism. At the same time, the close cooperation between large companies and SMEs is clearly recognised. Many view SMEs as important suppliers and partners to large companies.

Alongside this broad recognition, there are also critical reservations. A majority believe that large companies maximise their profits, in some cases at the expense of the general public. The results thus paint a nuanced picture: economic success and social responsibility are assessed together.

Economic growth is being supported – within clearly defined limits

Economic growth is generally viewed positively by 78 per cent of the population. It is associated with social prosperity, cultural offerings, international openness and the region’s economic strength.

At the same time, the study shows that growth is not perceived as exclusively positive. The strain on transport infrastructure and rising housing costs are particularly frequently cited as consequences of growth. Furthermore, 44 per cent of those surveyed believe that, whilst economic growth has brought benefits, it has now reached its limit.

Employment and prosperity are key factors in confidence in the economy

The impact analysis shows which factors are particularly strongly linked to a positive perception of the economy. Above all, the key factor is the belief that businesses create jobs and prosperity. The perception that businesses are committed to environmental and climate protection also has a positive effect. A more critical attitude, on the other hand, tends to emerge particularly where economic growth is perceived to have reached its limits.

Technical details

On behalf of the Basel Chamber of Commerce, gfs.bern conducted a representative mixed-mode survey between 2 and 27 February 2026 amongst 1,000 eligible voters from the cantons of Basel-Stadt (482 people) and Basel-Landschaft (518 people). Data was collected via computer-assisted telephone interviews (CATI), as well as through the gfs.bern online panel ‘Polittrends’ and the Bilendi panel. The data was weighted using a dual-frame method and according to age, gender, type of settlement and party affiliation. The margin of error is ±3.1 percentage points, assuming a 50/50 distribution.

Further information on the study can be found in the full study report (in German).
