Youth movements lose popularity - Swiss youth are once again increasingly relying on traditional means of participation.

The easyvote political monitor is an annual survey of secondary school students. Commissioned by the umbrella organisation Swiss Youth Parliaments (DSJ), more than 1,000 15-25 year-olds were asked about their political preferences and forms of participation for the seventh time in 2022.

Youth movements are always able to bring political demands from outside into the parliamentary process. Currently, the effectiveness of youth movements is rated less highly by students than in previous years. On the other hand, the willingness of young people to get involved in politics through institutionalised channels is higher this year than ever before: on the one hand, a clear majority of young people who will be entitled to vote in the next referenda, or who already are, would also like to participate in them. On the other hand, the majority of young people continue to see the popular initiative, referendum or petition as the most likely means of participation, even if less often than in the previous year.
