For a long time, the majority of the cantons was uncertain about the ban on tobacco advertising. We show the background.

After the veiling ban and the care initiative, the tobacco advertising ban was adopted on 13.2., making it three popular initiatives that have already been adopted in this legislature. It was uncertain whether the ban on tobacco advertising would ultimately founder on the rocks of the cantonal majority at the end of the day, and whether it would suffer the same fate as the responsible business initiative.

Tobacco advertising ban: Cantons Yes

It is now clear that the initiative to ban tobacco advertising has also cleared this hurdle: Our projection shows that 15 cantons are in favour, 8 are against. According to the projection, the traditionally conservative cantons of Central Switzerland and the cantons of Thurgau, St. Gallen and the two Appenzells have said no.

This means that the Yes vote is less united than in the case of the recently adopted care initiative, where only the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden said No. The vote was also less unanimous. In contrast to the corporate responsibility initiative, which failed due to a majority of the cantons, the cantons of Glarus, Solothurn, Basel Land, Schaffhausen, Graubünden, Aargau and Valais said yes.
